Before you sign up
- U.S. Bank counts only an ACH deposit of a paycheck or government benefit. Its own page says other electronic deposits and person-to-person payments are not direct deposits, so Zelle, Venmo and PayPal do not move you up a tier.
- There is a $12 monthly maintenance fee. One way to waive it is an average account balance of at least $1,500; a year of it unwaived is $144 against a $250 bonus.
- If you open in a branch or over the phone the offer is not automatic — a banker has to activate it at account opening. Opening through the promotional page applies it for you.
- A bank bonus is reported income. If you file a 1040-NR the paperwork is not the same as for a citizen.
