Before you sign up
- Send the standard transfer, never the instant one. Citi excludes funds sent "through an instant transfer service", and instant is the button Venmo and PayPal put in front of you.
- Also excluded: cash and cheque deposits, wires, moving money between Citi accounts, ATM and mobile deposits, and any P2P payment sent to a Citi debit card rather than to the account.
- There is a $15 monthly fee unless the account receives $250 or more in these deposits each month — a different, smaller test than the bonus one.
- Citi says to apply from its own offer page. Arriving at Citi another way can mean the same account opens without the bonus attached.
- A bank bonus is income and the bank reports it. If you file a 1040-NR the paperwork is not the same as for a citizen — check before you file.
